Cardiff Indoor Market is a unique shopping experience. The Victorian market is open daily between 8am-5pm. Under the glass roof, you will find the lively market filled with local independent traders, products ranging from Welsh artisan coffee to street food, vintage clothing to second-hand records, and even a psychic.
Cardiff Central Market, in the heart of the city centre, is one of the most popular markets in the Cardiff area. The impressive Victorian structure, which is Grade II listed, was opened in May 1891. A farmer’s market is known to have existed nearby since the 18th Century.
Cardiff Market has two shopping levels with a panoramic balcony wrapping around the interior walls. There are two entrances to the market, one on Trinity Street and the other on High Street. The High Street entrance has the iconic H.Samuel clock, which has hung above the door since 1910. The current clock dates from 1963.
Traders in the market offer a wide variety of products. Ashton’s fishmongers on the ground floor claim to have traded in the market since 1866. The Market Deli has also been trading for over 100 years; they have had the same stall since 1928.
You can get a trim at Andy’s Hairhut, get personalised or bespoke decorations from Keepsakes, The Wood Pak, Celtic Corner or Sox in the City. There’s also jewellery, books, second-hand records and vintage clothing. The market is known for its food, with fresh fruit and vegetables from Sullivans. If you want to take away, there’s The Naked Vegan, The Bread Stall and Cardiff Bakestones. You can also sit and eat at the Gallery Café or our favourite Ffwrnes Pizza on the first floor.
When the Christmas Lights are switched on, Cardiff Market keeps its doors open later than usual – until 9pm. Last year all of the regular stalls stayed open, and there was even a retro 80s disco taking place.
The indoor market was built on the site, which initially was Cardiff gaol. The gallows were located at the St Mary Street entrance. The infamous Cardiff Gaol housed hundreds of prisoners for more than 300 years.
The most famous and controversial execution was of Richard Lewis, known as Dic Penderyn, who was hanged here in 1831. He is seen as a martyr in Wales. He was a coal miner who lived in Merthyr Tydfil and was involved in the Merthyr Rising. He was arrested after the riot and accused of stabbing a soldier with a bayonet. The people doubted his guilt, and a petition was signed for his release.
Originally Cardiff Indoor Market was the city’s leading venue for the buying and selling of livestock. However, you will no longer find livestock tethered and penned outside its doors.
